Tax forms and IRS verification
Lasso sends your payments, so you give your tax form to Lasso, not to the program you partner with. Once it’s verified, the same tax form covers every program you work with on Lasso. You complete it once.
A verified tax form has to be on file before any payment can go out. To set up your payout method as well, see Get paid.
Which form to submit
Your portal asks for your country and whether you’re an individual or a business, then takes you to the right form. You don’t need to know the form name in advance.
| Form | Who submits it |
|---|---|
| W-9 | US persons and US entities (including US businesses and LLCs). |
| W-8BEN | Individuals based outside the US. |
| W-8BEN-E | Businesses and other entities based outside the US. |
If you file a W-8 and your country doesn’t issue a tax identification number, leave the foreign tax ID blank. It won’t block your submission.
Getting verified
Verification happens as you submit, so you almost always get an answer straight away.
- W-9: Lasso checks your legal name and tax ID with the IRS, usually within seconds.
- W-8: Lasso checks the form is complete and consistent (for example, that it’s signed and the permanent address is outside the US). If it is, it’s verified immediately.
Your tax information shows one of these results. Whenever you need to act, your portal shows a notice with a Correct my information button, which lets you fix just your legal name and tax ID without redoing the whole form.
- Verified: you’re in good standing and payments aren’t blocked.
- Needs attention: something didn’t match or wasn’t accepted. For a W-9 this is usually a small typo in your name or tax ID; for a W-8 your portal shows exactly which field to correct.
- Pending: occasionally a W-9 result can’t come back instantly. It resolves on its own shortly.
- Couldn’t be verified: the IRS check didn’t succeed and a plain retry won’t fix it. You can still correct your details yourself. If it still doesn’t go through, contact support.
- Can’t be checked right now: see below.
If your tax ID can’t be verified
If a check fails, choose Correct my information and re-enter your legal name and tax ID exactly as they appear on your IRS paperwork. The usual cause is a small typo, or, for a single-member LLC, using the business name where the IRS expects the owner’s name. Each re-check counts toward the IRS’s yearly limit for your tax ID, so double-check before you resubmit.
If your portal says We can’t check this tax ID right now, the IRS limits how often the same tax ID can be checked. The reason is shown:
- Two names are already on file for this tax ID. Enter the legal name exactly as it was verified before, and it resolves straight away.
- The tax ID has reached its checks for the year. Contact support@onelasso.com and the check will be re-run for you.
This doesn’t clear on its own, and payments to you are held until it’s resolved.
How long your tax form stays valid
| Form | Valid for |
|---|---|
| W-9 | 3 years from the date you sign it. |
| W-8BEN / W-8BEN-E | Through December 31 of the third year after you sign it. |
An expired tax form blocks payments, so your portal prompts you to renew it as it gets close. When you renew, your legal name and tax ID are shown masked and can’t be edited: you confirm your details, update your address if needed, and sign again. You don’t need to re-verify the tax ID. To change your legal name or tax ID, contact support.
Tax forms you may receive
At the end of the year, if you were paid through Lasso you may receive a form summarizing what you were paid. These rules decide whether a form is issued, not how much tax you owe; for that, ask a tax professional.
- 1099-NEC (US partners): issued when your total US payouts reach the IRS reporting threshold for the year. The threshold is measured per taxpayer across all your Lasso partnerships, not per program. Corporations (C-corporations, S-corporations, and LLCs taxed as a corporation) are exempt. An LLC taxed as a partnership is not. Thresholds are set by the IRS and change, so Lasso applies the current one automatically.
- 1042-S (partners outside the US who filed a W-8): there’s no minimum amount. Any US-source payout can trigger one.
Add your payout method and follow each payment from earned to received.
